Are you traveling with your Hermes Birkin?
January 8th, 2010
OMG! When I saw several photos of famous designer Marc Jacobs at a beach in St. Barts carrying an Hermes Birkin bags, my first thought was I HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT THIS! It is rare to see men carrying Hermes Birkin bags, but Marc Jacobs who is a very unique man, packed for his recent vacation not one, not two, but three Hermes Birkin bags! We see the green birkin, white birkin and the shadow birkin. Let me ask you this... When going on a vacation, do you take your Birkin with you? Or do you take another bag so you don’t have to carry it? If yes, do you take with you a leather Birkin? A Crocodile one? What size? How many do you pack for one trip. This can be daunting task, especially when there are many festivities to attend. How do you pack these babies?! Are you putting your birkins in your suitcase? OMG! The thought of having the bags lost in transit among the thousands of lost bags is scary! Share your traveling with your Birkin stories! We want to know! (all images can be found on the internet )

I am a Hermes Kelly and Birkin girl all the way. I only collect Kelly handbags in 32cm and 35cm. I have one 30cm Birkin in Black with GHW that I love in this size, but the rest of my Birkins are all 35cm. My style is casual chic with a Jet-Set vibe. I LOVE timeless pieces with a subdued air of luxury. I think Hermes does color better than any other design house. I favor more neutral, darker and versatile Hermes colors (Gold, Etoupe, Black, White, Rouge Garance, Marron Fonce, Rouge H, Indigo, Vert Fonce and Raisin.) I always choose my hardware based on the leather and color of my Hermes bag. I like to mix white gold and yellow gold so I can do either PHW or GHW. To mix it up at night I favor my Hermes Medor Clutch. I appreciate Hermes exotic skins; however, I do not see myself purchasing an exotic handbag now or in the near future.Michelle Moore - November 6th, 2009
Color is the first thing I look for in a bag. I usually carry large bags so I prefer a 32-35 Kelly and 35 Birkins. I no longer accept anything smaller.Kamila - November 8th, 2009
I am a Hermes Lady! It's class all the way! Love all! depends on the occasion and what goes with the outfit. As long as I am wearing Birkin or Kelly I know I will stand out:-))Arielle - November 29th, 2009
I figure out what color I need in my collection. Color definitely comes first. I recently decided I needed a new brown bag and went with a Cafe Garden Party. I don't mind adding color into my wardrobe: my raisin Lindy and Fuscia Kelly do just the trick to add a little zest all year round. Bag style definitely comes second. As I've said in posts before, it is important for me to have a bag I can use everyday for work but also on weekend days. I need to be able to fit all my necessities. When spending on Hermes, I need to make sure the bag I choose is durable! I'm also 5'8" so I need a large bag to go with my frame. I don't like a lot of hardware, which is why I'm such a big fan of Hermes. I would love to have an exotic skin Kelly or Birkin but for now I'll stick with the leather bags!Authentic or Fake? The Answer Is...

We wanted to update you on the last newsletter we sent out, asking if the Red Hermes JPG Shoulder Birkin was fake or an authentic handbag.
Thank you very much for participating and Congratulations to all of our subscribers who guess that this Red JPG Shoulder Birkin was a Fake handbag!
We have provided additional photos so you can see how fake this handbag is…notice one of the feet is missing, We received this bag in this condition...if you can unscrew the feet off of your bag, it is clearly a fake bag.

FakeIs This A Fake Or An Authentic Hermes JPG Shoulder Birkin?
November 2nd, 2009
Since we had a great response to our last blog regarding the fake handbag, we decided to send you another one…
Is this a fake or an authentic Hermes JPG Shoulder Birkin?
Thehotshopper - November 2nd, 2009
FAKEbev - November 2nd, 2009
I am guessing that it is fake, based upon the handle detail and the spacing where the flap scallops and the handle meet. Will be interesting to learn the right answer!Eat Smart Age Smart - November 2nd, 2009
Gosh, I don't know, I don't know. I missed the mark last time in a big way. I'm tempted to say it's an authentic Hermes JPG Shoulder Birkin. The hardware looks solid and look well crafted. I await the verdict!Eat Smart Age Smart - November 2nd, 2009
Hmmmm, this is quite difficult since I missed on spotting the fake in the last quiz. I'll say the hardware on this likee red Hermes Birkin looks authentic. I'd say it's a real JPG Shoulder Birkin!Sam - November 2nd, 2009

I think this one is a fake, the new Hermes bags are very bright colour wise, although I like this colour I think its a bit dull for what I have seen in Hermes in this style. Secondly the handles appear a bit fat where they join the bag as opposed to an even thickness, I dont like the way the top seam is curling forward and the metal plates are not lining up.sara - November 3rd, 2009
fake for sureThe Fake & Authentic Bag Answer
October 30th, 2009
90% of the bloggers chose bag #1 as the fake bag, we want to tell you the majority of the people who blogged in chose the WRONG BAG!
Bag #1 is an authentic 35cm Hermes Fuchsia Chevre Birkin with Palladium Hardware.
This is an ugly surprise…unfortunately this happens to many buyers who can not really distinguish between an authentic Hermes bag and a very good imitation.
Cynthia S. - October 30th, 2009
Very intriguing. I would like to know more details.Arielle - October 30th, 2009
Ahh! I didn't get to the Fake spotting on time however, in response to the blog about Birkins in shopping carts: I purchased my Birkin purposely in black Fjord as an every day bag. Fjord is Hermes' toughest leather. I use it as an every day bag and of course she will come to the supermarket with me and sit in the cart. I also recently purchased a raisin Clemence Lindy bag which will be joining my every day bag collection, and I am sure, her bum will see the inside of a shopping cart as well! The only Hermes bag I own that I will not bring to the supermarket with me is my Fuschia chevre Kelly. The color and leather is too sucsceptible to damage! Bottom line: when I spend so much on a bag, I think about it for every day use!Juicy - October 30th, 2009
Oh, my. I was sure #1 was the fake. So bright...so flashy. I'm so wrong.Amelia - October 30th, 2009
I find it interesting that everyone seems to think they know how to differ the fake from the real Birkin and find out that 99% are wrong. Lesson learned here is to only buy your Birkin from the store!Eat Smart Age Smart - October 30th, 2009
OMG! I would have been fooled. I was certain the bright fushia was fake. Arielle - I'm still saving my pennies to buy my first Birkin and it's great to read from a fellow Birkin-lover about which colours to choose. If I spend this kind of money on a bag, I do want to enjoy it as often as possible. See at first, I thought "black" would be borring and common, but after reading your point of view and also reading about Hiline and having to put your Birkin on the floor, I would die if a bright coloured Birking would get damaged or dirty. This was a great exercise and shows that if you want a real Birkin bag ... there is no such thing as cutting corner or else you'll end up with an expensive fake Birkin bag. This was a fun and educational little quiz! KriziaSarah B - October 31st, 2009
I cant belive so many people got it wrong. the one on the right doesnt hold itself so well and the handles are wonky.twiggy - November 2nd, 2009
I was right, yay! :)One Of These Bags Is Fake And One Is Authentic
October 28th, 2009
The fake Hermes bags…unfortunately they can be mistaken for an authentic bag, seems that nowadays fake bag creators are doing everything to have their fake bags look like the authentic ones.
But, there are always minor details that you can notice if what you are looking at is a fake or the real deal.
Can you spot the fake Hermes handbag?
Can you spot the fake bag here?
What is the differences between these two bags.
Why do you believe the one you have chosen is the fake bag?
Cynthia S - October 28th, 2009
From just this ONE far-away photo, my guess is that the bag on the left is fake. The handles appear to be a touch too long, the top line of the bag is incorrect, the overall size appears to be a few cm off, the rivets on the hardware look too prominent, and the stitching looks very regular as if it's machine-stitched instead of handmade. Also, the sheen on the leather in the photo on the right appears more consistent with Hermes' quality and the texture of the leather on the right hand side bag appears much more in keeping with genuine H leather (probably Clemence from the slouch the bag displays). Did I win??!Heidi - October 28th, 2009
No. 2 take one step forward. You are the authentic Birkin. The back piece to your closure hardware shows when locked.sameemv - October 28th, 2009
Without other details to look at (such as the bottom, the piping, the markings, side view I think the one on the left is a fake and here is my observation: 1. Real Birkin would NOT show the side of the bag when you look from the front view. 2. THe piping of the handle doesn't look smooth. 3. All the stiching doesn't look smooth. But you are so right about good fake Hermes bag... without a real one sitting next to it (as in the case of eBay listing) it's extremely hard to tell so the best you can do is to buy from a reputable seller (if you can't get it from the boutique).Lntn - October 29th, 2009
The bag on the right is fake. The handles are wrong.stephanie s - October 29th, 2009
Bag #2 is authentic, Bag #1 is not. The skin on Bag #1 looks way too smooth; #2 you can see the grain of the leather.USCGRL6 - October 29th, 2009
I think the bag on the left is the fake. The stitching on the bag seems perfect (machine done), the outside edges and piping does not look correct, the texture of the leather does not look like an Hermes leather I have seen before and the front straps that overlap the pontents are evenly matched up where on an authentic Birkin they overlap but do not evenly match up. I am anxious to see the correct answer :-)Eat Smart Age Smart - October 29th, 2009
I think the one of the left is the fake Birking bag! The pink is too bright in my opinion. The handles seem too long for the size of the bag. The leather also looks off. KriziaHiline - October 29th, 2009
I think the one on the right is the fake, although they both look authentic. Yes, I have placed my bag in shopping carts many times. Also on the floor of an aipplane and it KILLS me when the stewardess syas, "Stow that bag under the seat for take off." Yeah right...so I can get grease and dirt from the metal pices under the seat in front of me all over the bag. Even while lunching at Nello....it is hard to relax knowing that my croc Birkin is sitting on the floor practically under the woman next to me who is waving around a huge glass of Merlot as she speaks...One drop and your investment is gone!Janet W. - October 29th, 2009
The bag on the right (#2) just has a more "substantial" look about it, and the shape of it toward the bottom of the bag is more uniformly symetrical. The hardware on the strap is a dead giveaway, as the overlap of the metal plates is, as I believe is always true, obvious. This is the true Hermes Birkin, in my opinion. Am I right?Kamila - October 29th, 2009
The #1 Bag is fake!! The shape is too sguary and the skin is not too Hermes! And Yes, the worst part is when you go out and there is no safe place to put your bag you just don't enjoy yourself. The BEST place that I enjoy is "the breakfast" rest at Plaza Athenee in Paris, the chairs have a special shelve just for your bag:-)))chloe - October 30th, 2009
I believe the bag on the left #1 is the fake. The color looks off, too pink, and the grain of the leather looks too bumpy to be real Hermes. The handles looked too rolled and the bottom corners look like cheap stitching. So..which one is it??Michelle - October 30th, 2009
Left is fake, Right is real.Sorry For Our Delayed Blog!

We are back from a summer break...
But we never forgot you!
Even though we have been away, we still had you in mind and like you, we have been accompanied by our Birkins. Although we love to take our Birkins to wonderful and fancy places, sometimes our Birkins come with us to not so fancy places.
For example...have you ever seen someone at a super market with their Birkin sitting on the top basket? Have you ever placed your birkin in a supermarket cart? Gorgeous, fabulous and expensive birkin bags sitting in the dirty supermarket cart being dragged all over the store. If you have seen one or if you have placed your bag on the top basket...tell us all about it!
We want to know and so do all the ladies who wear these bags!
Cynthia S. - October 16th, 2009
Um. OF COURSE! Where else would she sit? I do it every time I go to the grocery store, unless I have my twin babies with me, in which case, I don't bring a B...I bring a diaper bag. In my neck of the woods, it's pretty common to see women with Birkins (and other H bags) on an everyday basis, so I am definitely not the only one who actually *uses* her bags every day.loveallbags - October 17th, 2009
I remember a certain day I left my 35cm indigo clemance birkin in a cart while shopping in a Japanese supermarket. I almost lost the bag! I had just pushed the cart into the elevator to go down when my 16 month old son, who was right behind me, started throwing up! When I turned around to grab my cart back, the elevator doors just closed with my bag inside in a shopping cart! What do I do?!?! I was lucky I had my nanny with me that day so I chased the elevator down to the ground floor (we were on the 3rd floor and did I mention that I was 6 months pregnant too?). When I arrived, there was a Japanese lady looking perplexed as she peered into the elevator because there was nobody there except for a shopping cart with a birkin bag! Then, here I arrived, huffing and puffing, just in time to retrieve my birkin! When I told my husband the story, his only comment was that it could only happen to me! By the way, shopping carts in Japanese supermarkets/grocery stores are super clean!Dinahbk - October 20th, 2009

Hello Dinahbk, Birkin raincoats can be bought at an Hermes store, you will have to find an Hermes store in your area. Thank you.Our View On Fake Birkins
May 20th, 2009
So what happens when someone tells you the love of your life is a fake (not your lover) Your birkin, the bag you love and adore, the bag you would sell your first born for (or at least sell the child you currently have at home)
Not authentic?
How could that be possible? It’s worse than a mix-up at the hospital.
John knew how much I loved these bags?
He knew I would move the earth to get my little claws on the latest, hottest color.
Could he have possibly bought a fake?
Did he try to outsmart everyone and pay less for the world’s most coveted bag?
So when you receive the news that your bag is a fake (YIKES!!) and they tell you “No Madam the feet should not screw off on the bottom of the bag?
Here you are now, hating the world………….sigh……. and you have to do it with a $300 copy of the bag you adore.
How do we know when a bag is not real? What do we look for to make sure our baby is the real deal? Of course the best way is to buy straight from an Hermes boutique. But what if you really cannot step foot inside their stores because the thought of sucking up to a salesperson for a $10,000 birkin makes you ill.
You must know your seller!
If you don’t know the seller, get their phone number and call them to hear their voice………..and then what?
What are the signs?
What do I look for in a fake birkin bag.
There are many signs…..but here are a few to start with:
The leather- Every leather Hermes makes has a name (Crazy! Like a new born baby!!!) You really need to make sure you know the leathers. Hermes has a leather book so ask to see “the book”
Stitching- All Hermes bags are hand stitched. You will see the stitching will not be perfect and sewed on an angle. So it’s slanted but also uneven, human hands cannot make perfect stitching……… (Straight stitching is a machine made fake for sure)
Ladies forget the letter stamp, the receipts………..those are not what make an Hermes bag authentic…..
Let’s just say when you have a new Hermes bag, there is a smell that cannot be compared to anything in this world, they just can’t bottle that fabulous leather smell!
Of course opening that big orange box can possibly the closest thing to sex next to a teucher champagne truffle………
Arielle - May 28th, 2009
That last part of this blog is the best: "threi s a smell that cannot be compared to anything in this world..." It is so true. My Hermes bags, despite frequent use (especially of my black one) still have this incredible luxurious leather smell that is completely different from the smell of the leathers of my other bags. My black Birkin is currently at Hermes being cleaned and repaired but I am hoping it comes back in 10 weeks smelling just like it did, or better, than when I had dropped it off!Size Does Matter... When It Comes to Bags
April 20th, 2009
Katie Holmes loves toting her Hermès Haut a Courroies bag around Manhattan. Mary-Kate Olsen is constantly spotted carrying larger than life bags, which often look so much larger than they actually are against her petite frame. And celebrities are just as likely to be spotted with a teeny tiny bag, like Demi Moore's mini Kelly croc, as they are hauling a heavyweight handbag down the street.
Celebrities aside, many women struggle with bag size--specifically, is a bag simply too large or too small for their body type? Delicate evening bags aside, a woman's handbag should never be smaller than her bottom. Unless you're built like Mary-Kate Olsen or Rachel Zoe, tiny wristlets or mini-Kellys like Demi Moore's should be avoided. Think about the proportions. If you're an average-sized woman, any mini-bag will only make you look larger. Likewise, if you're extremely petite and carry an HAC bag everyday, the bag will absolutely dwarf you. Katie Holmes is a tall woman, but she's also extremely slender, and at times, her gorgeous yet gigantic bag takes the attention away from her stylish ensembles. After all, Hermès designed the HAC in the 19th century as a bag fit to carry saddles, hunting gear, and riding equipment in. In other words, an HAC isn't built for simply toting your wallet and cell phone around in.
Your everyday bag should be large enough to accommodate your needs (Do you always carry a day planner? Your iPod? Your laptop?), small enough not to be an inconvenience (imaging attempted to carry on a croc HAC only to be told by airport security that you have to check it! I'd rather miss my flight than trust my Hermès bags to an airline!), and proportionate to your body (if you've got broad shoulders and are taller than six feet, a 25 cm Birkin may not flatter your frame. The Hermès JPG Birkin bag (named for Jean-Paul Gaultier), which can actually be carried over the shoulder, may be a better choice).
Follow this simple golden rule: if it looks like you're trying too hard to think "outside the box" with bag size, rethink your choice. The bag that looks wrong for you, size-wise, most likely is. Like dress size, everyone has a perfect bag "fit"... half the fun is finding yours!
Arielle - April 29th, 2009
Well, here I am again! I always have something to say on these blogs (and I'm sorry I didn't see this one sooner)!!! My black Birkin, which I wear most days is 35cm. I'm 5'8" and curvy. The bag fits my frame very nicely. I only carry small bags when I go out at night, or I tie a scarf around my Kelly wallet and use it as a clutch (that doubles as a shoulder bag). My pink Kelly bag is 32cm which is also a nice size for my frame, but I wish I would have gotten the next size up. It doesn't always accommodate all of my things (Kelly wallet, planner, IPod, keys, cell phone, etc). Since I got the Kelly bag at a consignment shop in NYC, I didn't have much choice in size. I fell in love with the bag and the color. I was hooked! I also have a small Hermes canvas bag for summer which I don't wear often because it is small. As for the rest of my bag collection, most are good sizes for me. I have a big black floral Gucci bag which I love for summer and a medium classic Bottega Veneta hobo which is also perfect for what I need it for. My white bag, a Foley & Corinna, is absolutely fantastic. It's flirty, flat, and fun and fits my frame. I have others but I think the readers get my drift :-) :-)A Happy Hermès Bag is a (Properly!) Clean Bag
March 27th, 2009
Cleaning a gorgeous handbag can be a nervewracking experience if you're unsure of how to specially care for the skin, leather or fabric. To give you a hand, here's our guide to keeping your bags looking brand new for life.
Your Bag Gets its "Beauty Sleep"
At Createurs De Luxe, we always use gloves when handling your bags. Using the utmost care, we ensure that your bag arrives with its accessories, that the dustbag for the clochette matches the dustbag for the bag itself, and that the clochette and keys are enclosed inside the bag. When we close the bag, we make certain that the front straps overlap the pontets (the two thin metal parts in front of the bag) before placing the bag inside its dustbag. The bag is gently placed on its back in an orange Hermes Box, with white tissue forming a little "bed", with a tissue "pillow" for the bag's handles to rest on. The bag's raincoat is placed beside the tissue pillow, and tissue is folded over the bag (like tucking it in with a tissue "blanket"). All safely tucked in, your bag gets its "beauty sleep" on its way to you!
Because proper storage is just as crucial to protecting a bag from undesired wear and tear as cleaning, some women store their bags the same way we prepare them (as above). It's important to store your bag on its side, especially leather bags, because if the leather is soft, the bag will relax and "slouch" over time.
Cleaning Your Bag
The golden rule is to NEVER use ANY product not specifically intended for the skin, leather, or fabric of your bag. Do not use household products (we've actually heard of women using Pledge--shriek!), and do not use cream or oil conditioners on a dirty bag (you'll seal in the dirt).
For leather bags, start by gently running a clean, slightly damp cloth along the inside and outside of your bag.
Use a very small dab (less than the size of a nickel) of leather cleaner (we like Lexol-pH, which produces a foaming lather) and clean the bag, inside and out.
Apply a dab of leather balm (we like Saphir Creme Universella Leather Balm).
Allow the balm to dry, then with a clean, dry cloth, buff the bag until it shines.
For toile and ostrich bags, we recommend using a toothbrush with a super gentle liquid soap and water.
Why Are My Exotic Bag's Handles Darker?!
Your hand lotion, suntan oil, and even the natural oils on your hands can cause your exotic bag's handles to darken. Unfortunately, this is not something that you yourself can fix or clean. For about $2,000, Hermès will change your handles--but the process takes about six months.
In the wine business, master sommeliers avoid wearing perfume to wine tastings because the experience of tasting wine can be altered by the introduction of additional fragrances to this nose. Just as sommeliers go without fragrance at special events, we suggest you go without your hand lotion on a day that you'll be handling your exotic bag. And if you're lathering up with oil and heading to the beach for the day... well, as we've said before, it may not be the place for your exotic Birkin!
We hope this is helpful to you, and urge you to contact us if you ever have questions on how to care for your Hermès bags.
Arielle - March 27th, 2009
I get nervous cleaning a several-thousand dollar bag on my own. What happens if I rub too hard? What happens if I use the wrong cleaner? Hermes Manhasset charges less than $100 to send the bag to the Madison Ave. store in NYC where there are professionals on-site who will clean the bag. I have a couple of repairs: a lose foot and the the hardware on the "belt" needs to be reglued in one spot. I'm told all repairs are free of charge. It just makes me feel better. I'll be away from my bag for approximately 8 weeks but my Birkin is black so I'll send it out after Memorial day and have it back by fall!Arielle - March 31st, 2009
Oh! And an added comment...I ALWAYS store my bags in their boxes, resting on thier pillows and tucked in when it is not use.Spring Out of the Blues with Splashes of Color
March 13th, 2009
The post-holiday lull between January 1st and the first real days of spring can be depressing,
especially if you live in colder climes. The winter months seem to drag on, bitterly cold, dull and colorless... but they don't have to.
Perhaps because of the global economic crisis, this year, we've seen more cheerful colors and bolder patterns coming out of Paris, Milan, and New York, and these flashes and splashes stand out best when paired with basic, tailored pieces. In Paris on Monday, hot Belgian designer Dries Van Noten unveiled his ready-to-wear collection for Fall '09, and it featured an array of mustard yellow blazers (check it out), surprising combinations of red and green separates (check it out), and wild animal prints (check it out). In Milan in January, Salvatore Ferragamo's collection was characterized by rich rouge dresses (check it out) and printed blouses (check it out). In New York last month, Isaac Mizrahi's RTW collection was a virtual rainbow of prints and hues (check it out). And even the men's ready-to-wear collection Hermes showed in Paris featured canary yellow jackets (check it out) and smart, colorful cardigans (check it out).
What does this mean for handbags? It means it's time to break out your colorful carry-alls and style them in surprising new ways. Think an Orange Crocodile Birkin with a charcoal gray suit. Or a Lagoon and Toile H Birkin with a cherry red shift dress. If your bag and shoes are basic black or brown, throw on a fierce green jacket or a bold animal print blouse.
Mixing and matching color in new ways has spilled over from the fashion industry into everything else: wedding vendors report turquoise and red as one of the hottest new wedding color schemes and interior design magazines are urging decorators to consider a purple accent wall for an unexpected burst of color in a dining room or library. The key to pulling off a surprising combination is to pull separates together with a single "goes with anything" unifying piece: a wide black belt, brown leather boots, a tailored navy blazer, a creamy white sweater, or a sophisticated bag.
What's your boldest style color combo, and what bag do you carry to pull it off?
Arielle - March 16th, 2009
I am a big fan of the orange/pink combination. In fact, my dream wedding is very simple with the brights in my flowers...orange and pink. But my wedding dreams have nothing at all to do with Hermes. I own a JCrew skirt with wide stripes alternating pink and orage. The pink is cotton and the orange is a chiffon. I have fuscha JCrew suede flats with a little pom pom on the front. I wear this with a white or fuschia shirt sleeve cashmere T-shirt (depending on how bright I feel like being when I wake up). The best part of the outfit: myu fuschia Kelly bag! I like to experiment but this is definitely my favorite combo (and my brightest)!Days of Our Bags
March 5th, 2009
Last week, we discussed "A Night Out with your Hermès Bag". Today, I want to talk about how your bags can be used to pull together your daytime look. Some women fret about what prints or patterns to avoid when carrying their crocodile Birkins (anything too busy will distract from and/or clash with the bag), if they have to wear a brown belt when carrying a brown bag (not necessarily!), and, of course, shoes, shoes, shoes!
Let's look to the stars for a little guidance.
On February 27, Hilary Duff left her hair appointment in LA with her Black Birkin in tow (check it out). While carrying a black bag allows for a lot of versatility, Hil kept her look low-key: cropped black jacket over a charcoal gray tee, black leggings, and killer gray stitched boots. To compliment the gold hardware on her bag, she sports a gold ring on her right middle finger. She looks comfortable but very chic, and her Birkin helps makes the ensemble seem more sophisticated.
Victoria Beckham certainly travels in style, and while her Tri-Color Kelly is a bold companion to this stunning checkered jacket (check it out), but she makes it work. The Kelly's rouge hue accentuates the red in the jacket, and is perfectly accessorized with Christian Louboutin pumps that are just a shade darker than the bag.
It's interesting to see how one person can style one bag so differently. The Fuschia Crocodile Birkin Eva Longoria Parker loves to carry is clearly the focal point of her casual white sundress/flip flops ensemble (check it out). And it remains the focal point with her all-black belted dress, fishnets, and boots ensemble (check it out). The color really pops, against the black or the white, and instead of trying to find complimentary colors (which could've yielded disaster with such a hot pink), Eva kept it basic.
I love the splash of a colorful bag with a casual outfit... Julia Roberts may have been trying to stay hidden from the paparazzi here (check it out) but see how her Blue Birkin gives her away?
When in doubt, with a crocodile bag, keep your fabrics uncomplicated and prints and patterns to a minimum. Colorful bags are best with simple shades, like whites, browns, blacks, and grays. And try to keep your hardware, jewelry, and accessories uniform--silver or gold, chunky or sleek. Shoes should be understated with a bold or croc bag, but can be fun and fabulous (think Hil's boots above) with a simpler bag.
What's your analysis of how Lindsay Lohan styled her Birkin (check it out)? I'd love to hear it.
How do you style your favorite bag for daytime looks? Share your thoughts in our comment section below.
Arielle - March 6th, 2009
I was once told that a brightly colored Birkin or Kelly, no matter the color, could be worn all year round and could be mixed and matched with other fun colors. I love my black Fjord Birkin for every day. I wear it to work most days. I have brown Chanel bag to wear with Brown outfits and a Navy Balenciaga bag to wear with navy however, despite these other bags, I rarely move away from my black Birkin for work. My Fuschia chevre Kelly bag I love to wear all year round. I wear it with suits (I have a fuschia shortsleeve turtleneck that I wear under the suit) but I also love wearing it with jeans. I've also been known to pair it with other fun bright colors. I love mixing, matching and experimenting with my Fuschia Kelly to see what turns heads and when my friends say, "maybe you should have worn a different bag today!"A Night Out with Your Hermès Bag
February 27th, 2009
You're headed out for a big night--perhaps a cocktail party, a benefit, or dinner at the new restaurant you've been dying to try.
You've got the dress, the shoes, and the jewelry. There's only one thing left to decide on, and it can make or break the outfit: which Hermès bag will you carry?
The size, handles, material, and hardware are important factors to consider. For a crowded venue with little elbow room, a heavy, 35cm Birkin that will hang in the crook of your elbow all night may not be a practical choice. And it's difficult to even fit your hand through a 25cm Birkin handle, let alone carry a plate or a cocktail while your Birkin dangles from your wrist.
If you need to shake hands and hold a drink for the majority of an evening, you need a hands-free bag. A smaller bag, like the Kelly Pochette, would be a more sensible option--plus, when you're seated, you can hold it securely in your lap. For a black tie affair, an elegant statement clutch, like the Medor Clutch, can carry your essentials without weighing you down and features the added bonus of dazzling, chunky hardware (Hermès Collier de Chien studding). With the Medor, not only is your outfit sexy, but your bag is too.
Speaking of hardware...
You're finally set on an outfit, you've donned your carefully chosen diamond jewelry... and suddenly you realize that the hardware on the bag you'd planned to take is gold. Or vice versa--perhaps you're wearing gold and the hardware is palladium. What do you do?
Personally, I evaluate which piece truly makes the outfit: the jewelry or the bag. If I'm wearing a strapless gown to show off a gorgeous VCA diamond necklace, I'll choose a bag with palladium hardware, because the necklace is the focal point. Or, If I'm wearing a little black dress and carrying a sexy, cherry red crocodile Birkin because I like the bright punch of color, I'll match my jewelry to the bag's hardware. But to be honest, sometimes? It doesn't even matter. If I want to carry that bag, I will carry that bag.
How do you decide which bag to take out for an evening? Do you adhere to certain self-imposed rules when selecting color, fabric, and size? Please share in our comments section below.

I purchased the Kelly wallet a few months ago and have been tying a silk Twilly through it and using it as much bag to go out with! It's great because I can comfortably fit my phone and keys into the wallet and it's light and comfortable! At some point, I would like to buy the Kelly Pochette but I'm not quite there yet!DeluxeDivaMe - March 3rd, 2009
Let's see a photo of that wallet! The Five Commandments of Birkin Behavior
February 24th, 2009
Ladies, let's talk. I know we love our Hermés Birkin bags to the point that we want to carry them everywhere. However, having witnessed firsthand Birkins on beach towels, Birkins on restaurant floors, and--yuck!--Birkins on bathroom floors, I felt compelled to share with you these Five Commandments of Birkin Behavior.
- Thou Shall Not Put Dog Poop in Your Birkin: This would be a no-brainer, right? Not for the woman in Palm Beach that I witnessed toting her 35cm gold Hermés Birkin while walking her dog. The dog did his business, and the woman collected it in a plastic bag... which she then deposited in her Birkin.
Feel free to take a moment to scream out loud before reading on.
Perhaps she thought it too icky to carry the plastic bag in her hand to the nearest trash bin, but I'd sooner pay someone to help me find a trash can than put a bag of fresh dog poop in my Birkin. - Thou Shall Not Put Your Birkin on the Floor of a Public Restroom: Again, seemingly common sense, but I've seen it. Sure it's difficult to fit your Birkin straps over the hook on the back of the stall door, so here's what I do: loop one strap through the other, make sure the side with the toggle is facing away from the door, and hang the Birkin by one strap, which fits on a standard hook much better than both straps do. If you can't figure this out, then set the Birkin on your lap, but for Pete's sake, do not put it on the icky, dirty floor of a public restroom.
- Thou Shall Not Leave Your Birkin Unattended Poolside or on a Beach: It's a glorious, warm, sunny day at the beach or pool, and after hours of sunning you decide to hop into the water to cool off.
Not if you brought your Birkin with you.
Perhaps you trust that most women can stroll past a Birkin sitting unsupervised on a lounge chair or beach towel and resist the temptation. Well, I don't! All it takes is five seconds with your back turned, and you've inadvertantly made some stranger the happiest woman on earth. If your day at the beach or pool includes going for a swim, leave your Birkin at home. Otherwise, your booty is landlocked for the day. - Thou Shall Not Set Your Birkin on the Floor of a Restaurant: Do you kick your Birkin? No? Then why should you allow restaurant servers to do so? If you set your Birkin on the ground beside your chair when out to dine, waitresses will step on it, bus boys will kick it, and it will become a hazard to innocent passersby--or even yourself (there's nothing less graceful than tripping over your own bag, ladies). Ask for a table with a booth and set your Birkin beside you. Or, if at all possible, set your Birkin on an empty chair at your table. Under no circumstances should the underside of your Birkin touch a restaurant floor.
- Thou Shall Not Carry Your Shiny Croc Birkin in the Rain: You can get caught in the rain; your Birkin can't. If your shiny, crocodile Birkin gets exposed to rain, you will immediately have non-treatable spots on your bag. Because Mother Nature is not always predictable, be prepared: keep a giant plastic bag--large enough to fit your Birkin in--in your car. Is it glamorous to carry your Birkin in a plastic bag? No. Is doing so more glamorous than having a permanently damaged, spotted Birkin? Yes. Long story short, if rain is in the forecast, use your back-up handbag.
Many of these simple rules boil down to common sense. Our Birkins deserve better, ladies.

I know this was written with a cheeky sensibility and I really do have a sense of humor, however, I would just like to offer a slightly different perspective. For me, a Birkin IS a thing of beauty and value, not just because of the cost to purchase it, but because of the hard work and care that a craftsperson took to make it by hand. That being said, I will admit that there are times when my beloved bags do have to (gasp!) sit on the floor in a public restroom for a moment--sometimes even at Target! Can you imagine?! LOL But hey, if there aren't hooks, there aren't hooks. I also occasionally set my Hermes bags on the floor in a restaurant if I really really must, though I am careful to keep them between my feet under the table so nothing gets spilled and they don't get kicked. To be fair, most of my "restaurant" bags are non-Birkins made of Box, though, and I'm much more careful with anything made of Box than I am with a Fjord, Togo or Clemence Birkin. The bottom line to me is that these bags are made to be treasured, yes, but also to be carried and used in one's everyday life. If one's lifestyle demands that one is in Target when one has to piddle, then so be it. They're made to last for generations, and while I never condone abuse of any Hermes bag (and wholeheartedly agree with rain protection via plastic bag!), I do think that there's a way to LIVE with them and not let them own you. Good thought provoking post, though!loveallbags - February 26th, 2009
As I am bag-obsessed, I have lived by these commandments for years and will continue to do so: 1. I do not have a pet nor will I ever have a pet that will require me to pick up their poop. ;) 2. My bags don't even go on the bathroom door hook if the door is dirty. Believe me, if you love your bag enough, you'll be creative and find a way... 3. For me, Birkins not = Beach, not even on a towel or under a cabana... that's why I design bags for the beach... 4. If I can't even hang my bags on the bathroom door hook, it's definitely not touching the floor... which is why I also design bag hangers! heh! 5. I usually have a large garbage bag in my car for those unforseen downpour when I am out with my exotic birkin. Or, if I happen to be out with my hubby and it suddenly rains, his jacket = my bag's raincoat! Since he knows how much these babies cost, he is more than happy enough to give up his jacket. And believe me, his "devotion" to my bags has been put to the test!Laurie Beth - February 26th, 2009
Hermes makes raincoats for the Birkin and the Kellys. They are very nice and if I forget to bring it I also use a shawl or jacket to cover.Arielle - February 27th, 2009
I agree with Another View! Sometimes, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. But, for restaurants and the office, I own a bag hanger for the edge of my desk. I also do my best not to even set it down on the floor in my car. As long as there is space, I will place it on the seat next to me or in the backseat. My Birkin in black Fjord so I don't worry so much about rain protection, though the raincoat is in the Hermes box and my Kelly is hot pink Chevre so although not exotic, the color and leather doesn't allow me to do what I do with the Birkin. I believe, like another blogger, that the Birkin or any Hermes bag is to be cherished, yes, but also to be fully included in the lifestyle of it's owner. What Would I Do for a Birkin Bag? Buy It Myself
February 13th, 2009
In 2003, when online retailer Bluefly.com ran a promotion to give away twelve Hermès bags (six Birkin, six Kelly), a camera crew hit the streets
of Manhattan to ask fashionistas,"What would you do for a Birkin bag?"
Many women volunteered various forms of public nudity, ranging from riding around in a cab naked to stripping and tightrope walking above the city. Another brave woman offered to lick a Manhattan sidewalk. But in a moment that will live on forever in YouTube history, with a stone-cold serious expression on her face, one woman offered to sacrifice her first born.
When FOX 11 in Los Angeles covered the sweepstakes, the male members of the news team were incredulous. "Six thousand dollars for a bag?" they kept repeating. Lifestyle Anchor Jillian Reynolds replied, simply, "It's a Birkin." Her matter of fact response said it all. Items of exceptional quality are priced accordingly. A Birkin bag isn't simply a purse, just as a Porsche isn't simply a car, and a 1787 Chateau Lafite Bordeaux isn't simply a bottle of wine.
I'm reminded of the Sex & the City movie, when Kim Catrell's self-loving Samantha Jones (who memorably dropped Lucy Liu's name to get bumped up the Birkin bag wait list during the TV series) bids up to $50,000 for a gorgeous diamond flower cocktail ring at an auction house, and still loses it. When she gets home to L.A., she is surprised to see that her movie star boyfriend has purchased the ring for her; and instead of being overjoyed, she's disappointed. It isn't that she's ungrateful--it's that this was something she had wanted to buy for herself.
Just the other day my friend's niece said, "When I get my first Birkin bag, I want to be the one to save up for it, select it and pay for it. To me, the bag would then represent something more than the Hermès label and Birkin story; it would represent me"
What does the bag you're most proud of say about you?
